Fencing Tactics: Mastering Distance, Tempo, and Second Intention

This book provides a detailed examination of fencing tactics, focusing on the core principles of bout control and strategic execution. Readers will explore the fundamentals of fencing strategy, including active distance management, controlling the tempo of the bout, and utilizing changes in rhythm to disrupt an opponent’s actions.
The text addresses how to establish and maintain the right of way. It covers establishing priority through blade actions and footwork, presents variations in attacks such as the straight thrust, and details the use of blade contact to prepare an offensive action. Furthermore, it explains tactical line changes, including the execution of the coupé to overcome a parry and the combination of disengages with blade presence to deceive the opponent.
Techniques for countering an opponent’s initiatives are also a central theme. The book explains the mechanics of the classic parry-riposte, emphasizing timing and the immediate transition from defense to offense. It also delves into counter-actions, such as the stop-hit into the opponent’s preparation. Methods for disrupting the opponent’s initiative, such as using a counter-parry or managing distance to interrupt an attack, are discussed.
A significant portion is dedicated to tactical preparation and adaptation. This includes systematic opponent analysis to identify preferred actions and reaction patterns. The construction and application of feints and the concept of second intention are thoroughly covered. The final section focuses on developing a flexible fencing strategy, from creating a pre-bout plan to making in-bout tactical adjustments.
