Softball Pitching: Fastpitch Mechanics for Dominant Underhand Throws

This guide provides a detailed look into the mechanics and strategies of softball pitching. It begins with the fundamentals of the underhand throw, covering aspects such as body posture, the arm circle, and the transfer of power from the body. The text explores how to optimize fastpitch mechanics through effective hip rotation and leg drive, followed by an analysis of the follow-through for stabilization.
The book then moves on to the mastery of different pitch types. It explains the principles behind generating ball rotation and spin, detailing how finger positioning and wrist action influence spin rate and release. Specific chapters are dedicated to the technical execution of vertical pitches, such as the riseball vs drop ball, and how to combine vertical with horizontal movement. Additionally, various changeup grips are presented as a method for reducing speed, emphasizing the importance of maintaining consistent throwing motion to deceive batters.
A significant portion is devoted to structured training for improving performance. This includes approaches to training for velocity, focusing on explosive power in the lower body. The guide outlines effective bullpen routines, from structured warm-ups to goal-oriented practice sessions between games. It also presents specific bullpen drills for enhancing accuracy and simulating game situations to build mental fortitude.
Finally, the book addresses the strategic elements and protective measures of the game. It covers pitch-calling strategy, including the analysis of opposing batters and adapting pitch sequences to different game scenarios. The concluding sections focus on arm care for pitchers, presenting strengthening exercises for the shoulder and elbow and discussing load management to help prevent overuse injuries.
